Ok, so grocerie tote it is. This is what you will need:
A durable fabric. Nylon or lightweight canvas, both work. Based on which size bag you want get enough fabric. For instance if you want the 18 by 24 you need 19 inches of a 60 in wide fabric....You also will need some thread and something for the straps, webbing or ribbon would work for this, but get what you think works for you.
If you want you can make the beach bag. (As a disclaimer I will focus on the grocery tote so if you don't feel like you can follow a pattern some you may want to do that one rather then the beach bag.) If you choose to do that this is what you will need:
1 1/4 Yard of 60" wide fabricThread5 yards of webbing or something for the straps. You can use additional fabric to make the straps tooRibbon or cord for a drawstring if you want to have one (really this is such a big bag it is not a bad idea).

I'd love to make the little tote bag. Audrey's been wanting one for her scriptures for a while. Looks like you'll be focusing on the grocery bag this time, and I'm not an "independent sewer" Is that a project we could do another time?
